Moonfrost: From Cozy RPG to Web3 Risk-to-Earn Arcade

OG blockchain game developer Oxalis has decided to remove blockchain from its cozy RPG Moonfrost. The now fully web2 game is being prepared for a premium launch on Steam.
However, the blockchain inspiration will continue in the form of Frost Arcade. This is described as a pure web3 ecosystem of simple browser games, featuring events, leaderboards, as well as co-op and PVP experiences.
Oxalis CEO Ric Moore commented on the risks of risk-to-earn games in a recent X post, emphasizing the value of using stablecoins for deterministic on-chain payouts based on deterministic results from grouped wagers.
Frost Arcade will also incorporate the collectibles and currencies that Moonfrost created and sold over the previous years.
In an X post, the project stated that the decision arose from the different requirements of web2 and web3 audiences.
“Web3 wants to make money, web2 just wants a good game,” it states.
Hence, Moonfrost will continue its development under art director Gina Nelson while Frost Arcade will be led by Moore.
However, Frost Arcade will not be running on the Open Loot blockchain that Moonfrost was previously using, although user balances will be transferred to the new blockchain. More news about which chain it will operate on is expected soon. Back in 2022, Moonfrost was associated with Solana, though it’s not clear if that will have any bearing on its next decision.
